Walk the Line – June Carter

June Carter

This scene from Walk the Line shows that Reese Witherspoon’s character, June Carter, must put on an act as the ditzy girl. When she is backstage talking to Johnny Cash she isn’t ditzy and shows that she has an extensive knowledge of music, but when she goes onstage she must put portray the “typical” dizty girly-girl.

This is connected to the course because before and during feminism men and even many women felt that women were supposed to play the role of this silly girl who didn’t know much about what was going on outside of the home and the kitchen.  This movie takes place after the large part of the Feminist Movement took place, but that still did not change many people’s ideas about women.  There is another part of this movie where a woman scolds June for getting divorced from her husband (this is already her second or third divorce), saying that June should have been a better wife and then they would not have had any problems.  Many people believe that anything that went wrong inside the home was the woman’s fault.
